Workshop: Understanding Childlessness in the Workplace
By Michelle Mildiner
Brussels, 10 December 2025
In every office, there is probably at least one colleague who is childless, and not by choice. Yet they’re too embarrassed to talk about it. The longing, the IVF, the miscarriages...nothing is said, and it remains a taboo.
In this workshop, we will:
- Share experiences.
- Discuss painful every-day office situations and inadvertently hurtful comments.
- Brainstorm how to talk about it and what to do, without disadvantaging or offending colleagues with children.
- Look at what some companies are already doing to improve wellbeing in this area.
Whether you’re involuntarily childless, you work in HR or you’re simply curious, all are welcome.
About Michelle Mildiner
Michelle teaches English to adults (intermediate and advanced), does proof-editing, and is a life coach. Born in London, she has lived in Brussels for around 20 years. In her spare time, she’s the lead singer in a band, plays piano badly, and is learning Dutch. She lives with her husband and their one-eared cat. Currently, Michelle is studying Grief & Bereavement Counselling, to better understand herself and to support others going through childlessness.
Having spent many years in various office environments dealing silently with her own loss, Michelle feels there is a real need for more dialogue and better understanding about being childless in the workplace. She hopes this workshop will be just the beginning.
