The puppet show must go on

You are warmly welcome to join us at the Imagination Club on Wednesday, 12 October at 18h45 for an interactive, experimental workshop on:

The Emotional Self and Society: The (Puppet) Show Must Go On
By Kassandra D. Rothenstadt

The triumph of reason has been held as the ideal standard of human intellectual pursuits since the Enlightenment and has come to symbolize our very existence in the famous Cartesian assertion: "I think therefore I am."  Since then we have also understood that an existence denied of emotion is a barren one, and more than that, emotion has greater power and sway over us than any, however well-constructed, logical appeal.  Governments, corporations, advertisers and marketers have capitalized on manipulating not only our thoughts, but also and more methodically so, our emotions.

But have we reached an impasse in this unrelenting, ever-increasing assault on our emotions?

Have we rendered our society 'post-emotional' where its authentic power has been lost in an effort to making it a mechanized project?

Are we living in an age of simulated sentiment and synthetic feeling?

Is our society 'the best of all possible worlds" of Leibniz or one described by George Orwell in his 1984?

"I can stand brute force, but brute reason is quite unbearable.  There is something unfair about its use. It is hitting below the intellect" (Oscar Wilde).

Kassandra's workshop will look at the role of emotions in society and will attempt to put them in perspective because human intelligence cannot limit itself solely to reason as true intellect involves heart as well as mind.

A special thanks to UBI for donating classroom space for us!
