Discovering
Brussels: What's Hiding Behind the Walls?
By Wendy Deyell
There is a fascinating hidden side of Brussels concealing many enchanting
gems that can only be discovered by being curious; by looking past the
facade and the quirkiness of the city. Exploring these finds, and sharing
engaging stories about the history, culture, and people that illustrate
these discoveries, is Wendy's passion.
Brussels generates strong emotions in those of us that come from somewhere
else. Do we enjoy life in the capital of Europe or do we simply put
up with it until we can leave? We can't help but make comparisons to
our 'home' country but do these perceptions help or hinder us?
In a virtual tour following the route of the 13th century wall around
Brussels, we'll explore some hidden places and look at why we build
walls and why we tear them down, both literally and figuratively. What
are we protecting, hiding (from), or fearing? When do walls represent
growth and openness and when are they symbols of being closed to the
rest of the world?
Taking an imaginary wander around the centre of the city, Wendy will
ask you to open your eyes, your heart, and your mind to experience Brussels,
and your attitude to it, in a new way.
About Wendy
A Francophile since childhood, Wendy has followed a love for all things
French from Toronto to Brussels via Quebec and France for education,
work and pleasure. A communications and PR professional by training,
an expat and dual citizen by virtue of chasing job opportunities, and
a cultural explorer by passion, she is now sharing her love for discovering
the hidden side of Brussels and Belgium in a venture called Wondrous
Wanders.
